Phil Ward, of Vickeburg MI has bought an old Dragon made by Anker & Jensen. It has a builder's plaque but no clues as to a sail number. We were in contact with the Dragon Association in Norway and their records indicate that this was a late 1934 build which was probably shipped directly to North America. The local story is that the previous owner, Fred A. Karsten had her on Green Lake WI and was the commodore of the Green Lake YC IN 1967. When he died, the Dragon was given to his son who subsequently lost it in a poker game to the boat stoarage owner. The current name on the transom is "Heritage".
Welcome to new US Dragon USA320, Blue Amaru owned by Tjerk de Ruiter. She is a 2011 Doomernik Dragon from the Netherlands via Hong Kong. She will be racing on Lake Tahoe this summer, where there is one other Dragon to play with. Sound like a good excuse to visit Tahoe.
USA312 Spitfire and owner Christopher Ball took two awards at the SDYC Opening Day in spring 2018. Spitfirre won "Best Maintained Yacht Overall" and "Best Maintained Sail". Hard to beat a well maintained for good looks!
When I asked him once how he got into sailing Dragons he said:
" I was standing on the break wall of Oakville Harbour as a long narrow varnished boat came in;
Tall bare chested well tanned man standing at the helm ,
A few bikinis on the foredeck.
I watched and said to myself
“I can do that" .
I shall personally miss all the help he gave me over the years, but, most of all, I will miss his sense of humour and that little twinkle in his eye.
The family had a small private ceremony, but have planned to hold a memorial in Picton in early February and in Guelph in early June. Details here.
Anne Garrett is the National Secretary for the American Dragon Association and has been sailing and racing Dragons since the early 80s.
