Back to the regatta. With Lane Rudd at the helm and Jim Burns’ experienced crew, Ayrborn proved hard to beat. Bullets for all but two of nine races where Norm Allyn’s Mistral was able to capture bullets with Ayrborn taking seconds. Mistral placed second overall but a ways back having to share a lock on second place with Rum & Monkey and Blue. Jumala, Rum & Monkey and Blue duked it out for third overall finishing within 3.5 points of one another. For Rum & Money and Blue, the DNC’s due to rig failure took them out of contention for third overall. The current proved a factor occasionally at the start with the pin favored, there ended up being a few tangles at pin end of the starting line. Similarly, occasional problems arose due to the current at the weather mark of the windward leeward twice around course.
The race committee did a great job. Of course, with a steady westerly both days, their job was made a bit easier. This was a perfect Dragon weekend. Sun. No rain. Great competition. Great sailors. Steady westerlies both days.
