Marty towing Mistral to Vancouver in 1972
Marty was one of the larger than life characters in the North American Dragon world. His first Dragon was a 1951 Westermoen which was one of the original 10 Dragons shipped to Seattle in the early 50s. Marty bought her second hand in 1965 and called her Solace, USA13. In 1970 Marty bought a new Børresen, Mistral, USA250. Solace was broken up in 1983, but Mistral has been recently restored and still races (successfully) in Vancouver as CAN118.
Shortly after this, Marty went into the Dragon building business. He bought the molds from Kelvin Savell in San Diego. Over time these molds, with modifications, were used to build Dragons by Schuppe (Canada), Miller (USA) and Chang (Hong Kong). All in all over 40 Dragons were built with these molds. Many of them are still actively racing.
Marty's full obituary is here. There will be a memorial service at the Corinthian Yacht Club of August 7th. Details in the obit.
