There were 8 Dragons out on Saturday in lovely conditions (westerly 10-15), although one managed to forget to register. Things were a little more exciting on Sunday with westerly winds consistently in the low 20s, gusting to high 20s. Congrats to CAN148 Ayrborn2 on their first win of the season!
Robert McLean is the new owner of CAN123, a 1978 Godsil/Miller, which he has named Kai, formerly Eclipse. Robert is a member of the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club and will be racing her with the Vancouver fleet. Welcome to the Dragons, Robert!
Tudo Azul, a 1960 Pedersen & Thuesen is heading to Holland for a complete restoration by Joop Doomernik. We hope to see her on the racing circuit soon, looking like new!
Welcome to new US Dragon USA320, Blue Amaru owned by Tjerk de Ruiter. She is a 2011 Doomernik Dragon from the Netherlands via Hong Kong. She will be racing on Lake Tahoe this summer, where there is one other Dragon to play with. Sound like a good excuse to visit Tahoe.
USA312 Spitfire and owner Christopher Ball took two awards at the SDYC Opening Day in spring 2018. Spitfirre won "Best Maintained Yacht Overall" and "Best Maintained Sail". Hard to beat a well maintained for good looks!
When I asked him once how he got into sailing Dragons he said:
" I was standing on the break wall of Oakville Harbour as a long narrow varnished boat came in;
Tall bare chested well tanned man standing at the helm ,
A few bikinis on the foredeck.
I watched and said to myself
“I can do that" .
I shall personally miss all the help he gave me over the years, but, most of all, I will miss his sense of humour and that little twinkle in his eye.
The family had a small private ceremony, but have planned to hold a memorial in Picton in early February and in Guelph in early June. Details here.
Anne Garrett is the National Secretary for the American Dragon Association and has been sailing and racing Dragons since the early 80s.
