The Vancouver Fleet’s May One Design Series went this past weekend under the auspices of blue skies, reasonably warm temperatures and at last, wonderful breezes. Saturday’s breezes swung from the west to the northwest at a steady 12 – 14 knots and flat seas. Finally there was a bit of a reversal in the standings caused by Ayrborn’s absence and breakdowns on Eagle and Curmudgeon. Nevertheless, the sailing was still extremely close with tight mark roundings and very close finishes. Dragonfly helmed by Leigh Andrew was in a very solid first place followed by Blue. On Sunday, the breezes diminished to 10 – 12 knots but the intensity of the completion did not. Both Curmudgeon and Eagle returned to the regatta but Dragonfly and Blue continued to dominate to end up in first and second followed by Eclipse. The racing was very close indeed and Ken Reid who usually wins these regattas was served with notice that 2015 may be a year of change in podium results.
Former RVYC Fleet Captain and now Treasurer, Gerry Cullen helmed Charles Holder’s Black Magic for the weekend and acquitted himself extremely well for his first time in a Dragon. The Fleet is hoping that he will be joining us in his own boat. Annie Pedersen hosted the Saturday get together and barbeque – Thank you for being a wonderful hostess, Annie!
